Daniel the Stylite

Daniel the Stylite
   Pillar saint at Anaplous on the Bosporos (q.v.) from 460 until his death in 493. His anonymous vita (q.v.) provides information about emperors Leo I and Zeno (qq.v.), as well as the usurper Basiliskos (q.v.). He is seen as the successor to Symeon the Stylite (q.v.), who bequeathed him his leather tunic. Daniel had influential patrons, including Leo I, for whom he acted as occasional mediator. Daniel's power was illustrated by the popular uprising in Constantinople (q.v.) that occurred when he descended from his pillar to mediate between the patriarch Akakios (q.v.) and Basiliskos. This, and other examples from his biography, illustrate the important role of holy men in fifth-century Byzantine society.
